WESTFIELDS Women's manager Ben Archer felt his side got the win they deserved after beating Droitwich Spa 4-2.

Two goals each for Lauren Brown and Sophie Elcox-Bond secured a much-needed win for Fields, who rise to eighth in the West Midlands Regional Women’s League.

Manager Archer expressed his delight after a well overdue victory.

“The game was closer than I would have hoped," he said.

"I feel we were the stronger team and should have seen the game out better but instead it was a nervy finish, 3-2 up and having to cope with a lot of pressure from the opposition towards the end so I was definitely feeling anxious on the side lines.

“Thankfully the team held out strong defensively and Lauren Brown broke away to score late on and seal the win which allowed me to relax for the last two minutes.

“When the whistle blew, I was really happy for the players as they have had a tough start to the season, but they continue to battle it out each week so it was nice to see them get what they deserved.”

The two goal scorers took the plaudits but Archer felt the performance of goalkeeper I'Laura Jenkins was also crucial in their maiden victory since promotion.

“Both players on their day can be match winners (Brown and Elcox-Bond), as it proved, they took their chances brilliantly at important moments of the match and for that they should be celebrated," added Archer.

“The whole team played their part; our goalkeeper made some important saves and other players were key at different times. "

Fields take on Solihull Sporting Ladies next, who sit third in the table after a solid start to the campaign.

Archer believes the win could kickstart momentum into their season.

“Hopefully this will give the players a boost after a few tough matches," he added.

“It’s been a big transition this season in a new league with a few different players in our squad too but as the team continues to gel, I’m confident the players can step up and continue to push us the table.

“We know that there will be bad days ahead too, we have a lot of learning to do at this level, it’s a very competitive league, but the signs are encouraging.”
