TEENAGER Mikey Nixon showed class and maturity as he scored a century for Ross-on-Wye seconds as cricket returned after a washout month.

The 16-year-old hit 17 boundaries in his 109 but it was not enough as his side lost to Dales 2nds in the GB Liners Marches League.

Skipper Gareth Jones (63) top scored for Dales in their successful chase.

In the Worcester County League, Brockhampton and Colwall lost out to Old Elizabethans and Old Hill respectively.

Bromyard were victorious however, with Ian Bullock’s 119 instrumental in their 17-run win over Pershore.

Marches League cricket also made a return, with 2019 champions Wormelow maintaining their unbeaten start to the season with a win over Fownhope Strollers at Kennelfield.

Having been invited to bat first, the home side’s innings was stuttering at 118-6 after the loss of captain Tom Cutler (16).

A fine 74 run partnership for the 7th wicket between Joe Snow (40) and Ian Herbert (57*) saw Wormelow post 212-8 from 45 overs, which earlier seemed a tough ask.

Luke Sparrow was also among the wicket takers picking up 4-14 as Strollers were dismissed for 89 in the 29th over.

Woolhope also had a successful weekend, beating Builth Wells by five wickets.

The match turned with the introduction of 16-year-old Hugo Pullen, who produced a masterclass in swing bowling, finishing with figures of 5-16. An excellent fielding performance alongside this ensured Builth were all out for 102.

Woolhope suffered a mini-collapse from 48-0 to 53-4. As an increasingly confident Builth side smelt an unlikely victory, it was left to Pullen (17*) and skipper Will Green (10*) to negotiate some difficult bowling and ensure a five wicket win with 14 overs left.

The win leaves Woolhope mid-table in the early stages of the Marches cricket season.

Ross firsts also faced Dales in Marches Division One. Adam Parkes made the breakthrough for the fielding Ross, clean bowling Jonathan Jones and allowing Josh Element to swing the game in Ross’ favour by taking four quick wickets. Ben Element took the final wicket, leaving Ross a target of 136.

In reply, Stuart Mair followed up his century four weeks earlier with an unbeaten 52.

Mair put on 83 alongside Alastair Cook (42) and finished the innings with Ben Element (29*) to win the match by nine wickets with almost twenty overs to spare. Woolhope 2nds beat neighbours Brockhampton 4ths.
