A CRICKET club near Hereford continues to build for the future ahead of the new season.

Burghill, Tillington and Weobley Cricket Club are busily preparing for the new season after the Government’s announcement that outdoor sport can resume on the 29th March.

Volunteers have been working hard in the off-season, getting the ground and facilities ready including building a new car park, re-fencing the ground and improving spectator viewing facilities.

One of the clubs most important projects has been to fundraise for a new drainage system, as the ground suffers from severe flooding every winter, delaying the ground staff preparing the wicket and outfield.

The club field three senior teams – the firsts play in the Worcester County League Division One, the seconds play in Division Seven, while the thirds, which is a combination of senior and junior players, play in Division Three of the Marches League.

The club has a strong junior section for children of all ages and abilities and prides itself on its ethos of ensuring all children that want to play in matches, do so and have the opportunity to take part. The club’s policy is to ‘grow their own.’

And last season in many first team games, there were eight home grown players in the team.

The club field teams in the Herefordshire Junior Leagues at under-nine, under-11, under-13 and under-15 and will be starting junior club training at the end of April.

They will also be running All Stars for ages five to eight and Dynamos cricket for ages eight to 11 for eight weeks starting in June.

All Stars Cricket provide children with all of the fundamental skills they need to play.

Through lively, fun games, they learn about cricket and are better prepared to take part in all sports.

Dynamos Cricket provides a next step for all those graduating from All Stars Cricket and the perfect introduction for all those new to the sport.

Chairman, Steve de Souza said: “The club goes from strength to strength.

"Last season our second team won the WCL Shield competition playing against teams in a league above us.

"Our young first team were a revelation, competing against much stronger and more experienced teams; over two games against Brockhampton CC, we shared the spoils.

"We have a vibrant junior section which is the lifeblood of the club, with outstanding coaches, managers and administrators.

"We are undertaking a huge infrastructure upgrade in the close season which has been made possible by the support of members and our generous sponsors.”

The club have announced PAF Hereford Ltd as their main sponsor.

Alpha Aggregates, Katherine Harriet Ltd and the Herefordshire Golf Club have also sponsored the club this year and join IDS Indata and Infinity as secondary sponsors.
