HEREFORD assistant manager Steve Burr said that his side need to learn to kill teams off following a 2-2 draw with Chorley.

The Bulls looked to be heading to a first home win of the season when Jared Hodgkiss gave them the lead on the hour with a deflected effort.

However, the hosts let Chorley pile on pressure resulting substitute Lewis Reilly heading his side level six minutes from time.

Three minutes later disaster struck as Andy Halls' strike looked to have won the game for the visitors only for a Lenell John-Lewis header salvaging a point in the final minute of normal time.

"It was another game where at home we've thrown the points away," said Burr.

"I thought we played some good stuff today and once we went 1-0 up in the second half I really thought we would go on to win comfortably.

"For whatever reason that didn't materialise. It's disappointing that we haven't got the maximum points today.

"When you're in a position like we were today it's important, if you're going to be up there competing, you've got to kill teams off and it just didn't happen.

"In some ways we've got to be grateful in the end that we got a point out of it.

"I just thought overall once we got in front we should have turned the screw and gone on to win comfortably.

"After we scored we never got hold of the ball for whatever reason and we tended to sit back.

"For me you go on and get another, there's no instruction to go in front and then sit back.

"You can't do that because you're not going to win games."

Chorley looked dangerous early in the tie and marksman Elliot Newby ran at the defence before playing in Ollie Shenton whose deflected effort flew just wide across goal.

At the other end John-Lewis held the ball up for Tom Owen-Evans whose low effort was palmed wide by goalkeeper Matt Urwin.

Newby was the focal point of the Chorley attack and crossed for Mike Calveley who headed over.

Newby himself forced Paul White into a low save as Hereford backed off from the marksman.

A minute into first half stoppages James McQuilkin had the best chance of the half but blazed over after Kelsey Mooney found him with a brilliant pass.

After the break Bulls defender Jamie Grimes almost broke the deadlock but saw his header saved.

Hereford eventually took the lead on the hour mark with skipper Hodgkiss seeing his effort canon off Scott Leather changing the direction of the ball and into the net.

Chorley were asking themselves how they weren't level with 15 minutes remaining.

Arlan Birch saw his close-range effort rattle the post before Paul White made a double save from a melee inside the box.

Chorley did level with six minutes remaining with Reilly heading home a Birch cross.

With three minutes left Andy Halls' low shot deflected off Hodgkiss and into the net to give Chorley an 87th minute lead.

However, they led for just two minutes with John-Lewis heading a corner into the top corner of the net to salvage a point.

"We seem to be creating a lot of chances but it's just finishing things off in that final third," added Burr.

"I think we'd be more concerned if we weren't creating chances.

"You need to kill teams off and we haven't done that today."
