A HEREFORDSHIRE football club have paid tribute to a former volunteer and supporter.

Wellington FC, based between Hereford and Leominster, said people involved with the non-league side are mourning the death of Alex Lowther.

Wellington said Mr Lowther was always on hand to give advice to the club.

"Alex became one of the football club’s close followers and helpers," a tribute said.

"He was always there to give us advice and discuss the game's finer points over a pint in the club after the match.

We were fortunate that at out last presentation evening, Alex was our principal guest and he told everyone present of his life’s journey and how he eventually came to Hereford to work .

"A lifelong, passionate Sunderland supporter and knowledgeable football pundit, we were lucky to have him as our friend and walk amongst us.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with Alex’s family at this very sad time."
