LUCTONIANS head coach Ryan Watkins praised the smart tactics of his side as they weathered a storm to beat Sedgley 22-13.

Playing against a strong wind Lucs were just six points behind at the break before using the conditions to their advantage running over 15 points without reply.

Despite the tough conditions Drew Cheshire opened the scoring after four minutes before a penalty try and Callum Young effort saw them take victory.

"The wind across the pitch made it hard to play in one half or the other," said Watkins.

"We knew we would have to defend in the first half which we did and also scored an outstanding try.

"That score made a big difference in getting the win. Tactically the boys were very smart and took care of the ball in the first half.

"Going again the wind we had to keep the ball for long periods of time. From the kick-off we kept the ball for about five minutes and then scored from a line-out.

"We knew they would come back and we would have to defend most of the half, but we dug in and they only scored from our mistakes."

Despite playing against the first half wind the Black and Whites drove their opponents back and following a period of good possession Drew Cheshire crossed the whitewash, with Louis Silver converting.

Sedgeley used the wind to their advantage pinning the hosts back and Stephen Collins scored two penalties along with Matthew Gallagher's converted effort as the visitors led 13-7 at half-time.

Playing with the conditions Seb Robinson was illegally held back on the line resulting in a penalty try just eight minutes into the second half.

After regaining the lead Josh Watkins was unfortunate to see his effort chalked off after being judged to have been in front of the kicker from the kick-off.

Lucs showed their strength and a third try came after 54 minutes when Callum Young was driven over the whitewash.

The Black and Whites looked for a bonus point but only a Silver penalty could add to the scoreline.

This weekend Luctonians head to second place Fylde looking to pick up more points in their quest for a mid-table finish.

"We will just keep chipping away and picking up points," added Watkins.

"We will go there and be mindful that we don't get opened up. We will try and control the game as well as we can and keep hold of the ball.

"Hopefully we can turn the game a little bit and make sure we don't give them opportunities to score."
