ROSS Ladies' A team got their 2020 campaign underway with a victory over Bromsgrove B by the narrowest of margins.

Newest recruit Manda Kiernan joined with Sarah Drake to make up the two pair against Bromsgrove's second pair in the first rubber.

The first set went with serve right up until four all when the Ross pair broke their service game and then held their own to take the first set 6-4.

The second setwas a hard fought battle that saw long rallies and a particularly long service game for Drake to stay at 5-5.

This took them into the tie break where Bromsgrove went ahead by three points, however the steely determination of the Ross couple saw them come back to draw level with it going either way for the next eight points.

Eventually the Ross pair managed to break one of the Bromsgrove Ladies’ serve and Kiernan served an ace for the match.

Meanwhile their Ross team-mass Val Davies and Brenda Saunders took on the opponents first ranked pair and after a shaky start, losing the first set 6-2 they came back to win the second set 6-2.

It was another, hard fought battle, with long rallies and much excellent net work, but unfortunately the Ross Ladies lost 6-3.

Swapping opponents, Kiernan and Drake now took on the first ranked pair, but were unable to find their rhythm quickly enough losing the first set 6-2.

Despite finding better form they were unable to make it count on the right points and also lost the second set 6-2.

Meanwhile Davies and Saunders, determined after narrowly losing their first rubber, won the first set 6-1 and the second 6-3.

At the end of the match wins and games scores identical, it all came down to the set that Davies and Saunders took in their first match to edge the tie.
