WESTFIELDS put troubles of a weakened squad and a broken down coach behind them as they beat Newton Abbot Spurs 8-0 in the FA Vase.

Undefeated in the league Fields made it eight wins on the bounce with Richard Greaves continuing his scoring run with a hat-trick.

Ryan Green's header put Fields two goals ahead before the break and then second half onslaught sealed the victory.

In the second round next month Fields face Leicester Nirvana.

"It was good as everything was up against us," said manager Phil Glover.

"We were missing five players and when our bus broke down you start to think it is going to be one of those days.

"We knew we had been in a game at half-time without them hurting us or creating too much.

"At half-time it was about making sure we went about our business and our mentality was right and we did that.

"The score-line did flatter us because they were competitive and we scored (to make it 2-0) on the stroke of half-time.

"Some of our goals were really good and we were quite relentless."

South West Peninsular side Newton Abbot had won five of their last six home games but fell behind after eight minutes when Greaves fired home from a Sam Gwynne free-kick.

Green doubled their lead shortly before the break following a fairly even first half.

Fields turned on the style in the second half and Matt Reeve's effort from 30 yards flew into the top corner.

This signalled an avalanche of goals with Greaves competing his hat-trick before Keanu Cooper grabbed a fine solo goal in the 80th minute.

Westfields were then applauded with some fine play by the home crowd of 203 when Olly Butler tucked away the seventh goal before Ben Hayes lobbed in the eighth in the dying minutes.

Westfields will be looking for FA Vase revenge in the next round, on November 2, at a Nirvana side who knocked them out the competition 4-0 last season at Allpay Park.

"I would like a good Vase run as it's my first year as a manager in the competition," added Glover.

"We know a little bit about them (Leicester Nirvana) as they beat us 4-0 at our place last season.

"They were a good side and we were second best. I'm hoping it is a different story this year.

"We have got a lot of games before we play them and we won't look too far ahead."

Westfields head to Bishops Cleeve on Tuesday night in the Floodlit Challenge Cup before travelling up the A49 to play Wellington in the Bluefin Sports Challenge Cup on Saturday.

"I'm a big believer in momentum which I said to the lads in pre-season," added Glover.

"With the lads that we've got in our squad if we can get momentum going then that can take us places.

"The cups give us a chance to use all our squad and it's important that we prepare right for every game we play."
