AN audience of 300 people helped to raise thousands of pounds for Westfields at the club's annual Sportsman's Dinner last week.

Taking place at The Three Counties Hotel this year's guest speaker was Bruce Grobbelaar, supported by comedian Lester Crabtree.

Grobbelaar entertained guests with tales from his early days of growing up and learning football in Zimbabwe including signing his first contract at aged 14 being paid £10 a week.

He spoke about playing for American side Vancouver Whitecaps before coming over to the UK and at first struggling to get a work visa.

Grobbelaar also spoke fondly about his Liverpool career and his famous 'spaghetti legs' moment in the European Cup final against Roma.

He was followed up by stand-up comedian Crabtree with his 'cheeky, yet attacking' style which kept the audience entertained.

The evening finished with an auction and a raffle which made a huge amount for the football club.

Top auction prize was a luxury day at Cheltenham Festival including a meal and drinks which was sold for £925.

Other items included a round of golf at Burghill Valley GC; signed cricket memorabilia; signed British Rugby Lions shirt; a day pheasant shooting; signed football shirts; and a Justin Rose signed golf shirt.
