LUCTONIANS head coach Ryan Watkins said that his side left themselves too much to do as they fell just short of a dramatic fightback against Chester.

The visitors used their first half wind advantage to great effect running over three tries to give themselves a 19-0 lead at the break.

Teenager Josh Phipps reduced their advantage with a penalty before Callum Young was driven over from a rolling maul for the home side's opening try.

Phipps added the conversion and a second penalty to keep the scoreboard ticking over to 19-13.

Despite being under pressure Chester found a gap in the Lucs line and added a bonus point try.

After Kyle Joseph was given a yellow for Chester with 10 minutes remaining Josh Watkins crossed the whitewash to give the home fans hope.

However, despite looking bound for a last gasp try Chester stole the ball and the victory.

"We've just got ourselves to blame as in the first half we made a few errors that cost us," said Watkins.

"We didn't take our chances or stay in their half for long enough. We knew the first half would be tough against a strong wind so we needed to keep the score down to give ourselves a good shot in the second half.

"They scored one too many tries. We had a chance right at the end with a line-out on their try line. They put their guy up who stole the ball which was a disappointing way to finish.

"We don't need to be in that position at the end of the game and we don't need to be winning it in the last minute.

"We can't keep letting these games slip away from us and the home games are the ones we have got to win, that's the bottom line.

What was really positive was that our scrum was really dominant which is something we haven't seen in this league.

"We have spent a lot of time putting work into that. We actually coped in that area and when it gets wetter it will be really important to get that part of our game right.

"Our forwards was a positive thing."

This weekend Luctonians head to a Caldy side who have won all four of their opening games.

"It will be a tough game on Saturday and we will do what we can to get something out of it," added Watkins.

"We've got a pretty strong squad so hopefully we can go and snatch something on the road."
