A BOWLS World Champion fell by the wayside as Brimfield bowlers made it through to the last 16 of the game’s national championships.

Karen Tandler and Barbara Griffiths could hardly have had a tougher draw in the ladies’ pairs, facing three times indoor world champion Katherine Rednall and her mum Christine in the first round of the Bowls England championships at Leamington Spa.

But it was Rednall who found herself up against it, struggling to find the line and weight as the Brimfield and Little Hereford duo coasted to a 19-7 win.

Griffiths and Tandler, part of the Brimfield team which will compete in the quarter finals of the Tony Allcock Trophy at Leamington later this month, continued their impressive form in the next round, defeating a team from Wiltshire 25-10.

In the last 16 they faced a Kent duo and it went right down to the wire. On the last end Griffiths took the jack into the ditch but it chipped the wrong way and Brimfield ended up losing by one shot.

Players from Brimfield, representing Herefordshire, have competed in all of the main ladies’ events at the nationals this year.
