A SKITTLES team from Hereford has pulled off a stunning victory in an inter-county competition. The Beevers, who play out of the city’s Snooker Centre, beat off 44 teams from across the South West and Wales to lift the coveted Serious About Events tournament in Weston-super-Mare.

The team, especially put together for the annual competition, lost their opening match and only got through to the finals on the pin count back.

"Our luck turned in the finals," said captain Wayne Birch.

"We played really well from then on. We don’t go to win, we go to enjoy ourselves and have a laugh with our mates.

"But of course it’s great when we do get up on the podium."

This is a third victory in the annual Serious About Events tournament series for the Beevers.

They lifted the winning trophy in Torquay five years ago and previously at Weston 11 years ago.

The team beat their nearest rivals, the Ex Servicemen, with a score of 445, a very decisive 13 points ahead.

The Beevers team member Paul Sutton also won the trophy for the highest scoring man with 70 points.

The team promptly donated their winnings to Cancer Research UK.

The competition is part of the Serious About Events Series of tournaments staged annually. Serious About Events based in Torquay also organise the annual British Skittles Championships, currently in the regional round stage.
