A TEAM of Kington golfers brought a touch of France back to the club by clinching The Cognac Cup.

The competition has been a 31 year long collaboration between the Cognac region of France and the Shropshire & Herefordshire Golf Union (SHUGC).

William Coates and Cognac (Hennessy) have kindly sponsored this event for the last 31 years during which time the competition has been hosted alternately at Kington Golf Club and the home golf club of the President of the SHUGC.

This was the 31st year of The Cognac Cup and featured 30 teams from clubs throughout region in a stableford competition with the best two scores to count on each hole.

Kington ran out clear winners with their team of Phil Jones, Rob Price, Graham Priday and Allan Williams accumulating 85 Points.

Patsull Park GC took second on 79 Points while Burghill Valley won a title battle for third.

Their team of Paul Harrison, Ed Morley, Paul Jones and Frank Bowen finished on 77 points and took third on count-back from Ludlow GC.

Hill Valley GC won the front nine with 38 Points and Telford GC the back 9 with 44 Points.

Nearest pins competitions were won by: Ed Morley (3rd); John Cushing (5th); Ian Blower (9th); Brett Murray (12th); Harold Hoof (15th) and Rob Price (18th).

During the event's 31-year life it has only been made possible thanks to a tremendous amount of work from Glyn and Jill Wictome, of Kington Golf Club, and William Coates of Hennessey.

Their efforts have enabled this prestigious event to gain momentum since the inaugural competition in 1988.

For his contribution, hard work and generosity to Kington Golf Club, William Coates was made an Honorary Life Member in a presentation conducted by Glyn Wictome.
