A TALENTED pair of Herefordshire cricketers got their season off to a flying start with an extraordinary 258-run second wicket partnership.

Fourteen-year-olds Luke Powell and Harry Sockett came together in the fifth over batting for Burghill, Tillington and Weobley seconds during their 207-run victory over Kempsey CC in Division Eight of the Worcester League.

Powell scored 107 having opened the batting including 16 fours and two, sixes.

Meanwhile at the other end Sockett reached his 100 with 19 fours and three, sixes, before being dismissed for a 136 in the 40th over.

The Burghill bowling performance included four wickets for Peter Wall and three for Denholm Smith.

Brockhampton seconds were helped to victory in the Worcestershire Division Two by the bowling of Indiana Jerram.

Jerram skittled through Himley’s middle order with figures of 5-36 as the hosts were bowled out for 130.

In reply a steady innings from the visitors saw them edge towards their target with opener Robert Protheroe top scoring on 34 as they reached their target.

Meanwhile Eastnor took a winning draw at Alvechurch & Hopwood but came a wicket short of a deserved victory.

The visitors were put into bat and captain Scott Roberts came two runs short of his half-century while Mohammed Munir also came close finishing on 43.

Despite their efforts the middle and tail end failed to added substantial runs although they were awarded 43 extras.

In response only a knock of 87 from James Beech helped Alvechurch to a 168-9.
