TWO late goals in a week has kept Westfields in the title race ahead of a huge weekend of fixtures.

John Mills' 92nd minute earned Andy Bevans' side a 2-2 draw against Romulus on Saturday before Aidan Thomas struck an 85th minute winner to help them beat Stourport Swifts by a single goal on Tuesday night.

With eight games to play Fields sit in third, just five points behind leaders Ilkeston Town and one behind their hosts on Saturday Walsall Wood.

On a day which could give an indication where the title will end up Ilkeston host fourth place Sporting Khalsa.

"For the Midlands Football League to have the top four sides all playing each other is great," said Bevan.

"It's going to be like a play-off match so it's great to be involved in. We will be really pushing and trying for the win but know that it won't be an easy game as they (Walsall Wood) are probably the hardest team we have played at home.

"We will be going there to win and not to just stay in the game. We won't change our game plan and want to play our style of football."

Bevan's side left it late at home on Saturday to snatch a point and a 2-2 draw over relegation fighting Romulus.

The tough tackling visitors bossed the match early on and Ethan Delaney put them ahead before Keane Cooper equalised with a shot into the top corner.

After the break Mills and Thomas had shots saved before the visitors restored their lead with a far post tap in after winger Chad Degville-Cross was left unmarked.

However, Mills saved a point by slotting home a penalty in the 92nd minute before his side almost snatched all the points when Thomas flashed a cross across the face of goal, but Craig Jones narrowly missed the ball.

Westfields were almost left frustrated again on Tuesday night as a bobbly pitch at Stourport led for a tough game.

However, Thomas settled the tie with a strike from outside the box to earn his side three points.

"It was a great goal and a massive three points which we needed to stay in the hunt," added Bevan.

"It was a difficult pitch which meant we had to adapt and be patient. We showed that we had a different plan by being patient and waiting for our opportunity.

"Top teams find a way of scoring late on and we did it last night."
