DESPITE picking up his third World Record and being crowned World Champion Matthew Goodwin is set to walk away from competitive para-trap shooting action.

The 41-year-old who lives between Almeley and Eardisley, has had to turn down two international call ups for Great Britain this year for World Cup rounds in France and the United Arab Emirates after British Shooting/UK Sport removed funding for the discipline.

Faced with funding the expensive trips himself Goodwin did travel to the the IPC/WSPS World Championships near Lake Garda in Italy earlier this month.

Goodwin competed in the individual and the three-man team championships with team-mates Allan Ritchie and Paul Bailey.

Unfortunately Goodwin struggled on day one, but managed to pull back into contention on day two.

The Herefordshire shooter narrowly missed a place in the six-man individual final after losing out in a sudden-death shoot off.

However, the scores for the three-man team event were strong and Great Britain won the World Championship with a massive 14 targets, setting a new world record.

"That is the third World Record of my career having set two last year at the same venue, one again in the team event and also one in the individuals," said Goodwin who became paralysed following a car accident in 1996 when he was 18 and started clay shooting 10 years later.

"This year I have also been appointed as an Olympic Trap coach for British Shooting and the Welsh Target Shooting Association where I help to identify and develop new talent, both Para and able bodied.

"It's a bit of a shame that the funding has been withdrawn. Next year the World Cup rounds are in United Arab Emirates, Texas and Croatia before the World Championships in Sydney, Australia.

"In reality I'm near the end of my career and that's how it is but I enjoy coaching. I'm not ruling out coming back in two or three years but at the moment I'm looking at taking a little break."
