THE Men's and Women's Trophy winners at Ross Golf Club received their accolades at the Annual Presentation Evening recently.

Sophie Price, aged 19, made it a hat-trick of Lady Champion titles following 36 holes of scratch match play against former Champion Helen Palmer.

Despite both players sporting eight handicaps Price was in fine form and was five holes up after 18 holes with the match finishing after 27 holes were played with Price 10 up.

Price made it a double celebration after also winning the Howard Porter Trophy with her foursomes playing partner Cam Haines.

Teenagers Rhian McGinley and Phoebe Barber have both enjoyed a season of accomplishment and during the past 12 months McGinley has seen her handicap tumble from 33 to 24 winning both George and Margaret Lane and Bob Beavis Cups and the Six Holes Knock-Out final.

She also finished runner-up to Pat Johnson in the Ladies Summer Knock-Out Cup.

Equally Barber had a playing handicap of 36 two years ago and her 'continuous improvement' mindset has resulted in her now playing off a 20 handicap and won her first adult competition in the Bronze Scratch Cup.

A new name was added to the Men's Club Champion honours board when five handicapper Simon Sharpe claimed the title at just his second attempt.

Sharpe was considered the outsider by many when he faced 36 holes of scratch match-play golf against the more experienced two handicapper Harvey Hancock to decide the Ross Club's 2018 Men's Title.

Hancock gained some ascendancy in the opening 18 holes to establish a three holes advantage at one stage.

However, Sharpe gradually found his game plan playing some solid golf and his course management was crucial in enabling him to claw his way back and when lunch was taken at the half-way stage the match was all square.

In the afternoon round Sharpe was two holes up after four including a birdie at the first hole. Hancock responded with some excellent golf allowing the match to ebb and flow with his own birdie when holing out from a bunker on the 12th before Sharpe won the 17th to claim a 2/1 victory.

Sharpe is the first player to claim the Men's Club Champions title at both the Ross Golf Club and South Herefordshire Golf Club.
