A MULTI-TALENTED school pupil came away with a haul of medals from the School Games in Pentathlon.

Pentathlon Hereford member and St Marys RC High School pupil, Rebecca Wreyford finished her summer competitions with a fine performance at this years Games held recently at Loughborough.

The 15-year-old collected a bronze in the under-16 individual, silver in team and bronze in the relay.

She impressed the field with her consistent shooting thanks to coaching from the former Olympic Pentathlon Coach, Bernie Moss.

Modern Pentathlon was added to the Olympic Games in 1912 and also includes fencing, swimming and equestrian show jumping. The shooting and running elements that were originally treated separately have since been combined and become known as Laser Run.

Laser Run is the exhilarating finale to the Olympic sport of Modern Pentathlon with athletes required to alternate between shooting a laser pistol and running in a race to the finish line.

This last phase of the Olympic Sport has now been adapted to form a stand-alone event suitable for all ages, levels and abilities, with no previous experience needed.

Wreyford has had an impressive season after taking fourth place in the National Pentathlon Championships providing a consistent performance throughout the four phases.

In the equestrian ride, she rode well and only took one pole and two time faults.

Another good swim and very strong fence saw Becky come into the laser run in third place. With strong shooting and running she smashed her personal best but was overtaken by Poppy Clarke to finish fourth.

As a strong fencer, thanks to local GB Coach John Rees and Malvern Hills Sword Fencing Club, Wreyford was also selected to represent Wales in the Commonwealth Junior and Cadet Fencing Championships, held in July.

This was the teenager's first experience of high level competition and she put in a good performance to help Wales take fourth place in the team Cadet and Junior classes.

Individually Wreyford finished 18th at Cadet, beating fencers from South Africa, Malaysia, Australia, Scotland, Northern Ireland and Indonesia. She is now preparing for this season's fencing campaign where she starts with a GB Cadet ranking of 25.
