BROMYARD and Ross-on-Wye got their seasons underway by progressing into quarter-final of the North Midlands Vase.

Ross, who have won the competition for the last two seasons travelled to Yardley and District in the opening round.

The reigning champions were made to work hard for their victory but came away with a 39-22 win to progress into the next round.

They begin their Gloucester 1 campaign at home this weekend (3pm) when they come up against Cheltenham North.

Meanwhile, Bromyard opened their season with a convincing 39-10 victory over Midlands 5 West (North) side Chaddesley Corbett.

After several phases of forward play the ball was spread to John Pudge who burst through the centres for the opening try.

That try was quickly cancelled out from the kick-off when an intercepted pass allowed Chaddesley to hit back straight away.

Several dropped balls in the Chaddesley 22 meant the teams were level until a Pat Hill penalty and a second John Pudge try gave Bromyard a 15-5 lead going into half time.

The second half saw four more Bromyard tries from Kris Brown, Tom Morris, Rhys Cooper and Jamie Gibbons before Chaddesley scored at the death resulting in a 39-10 final score.

Bromyard open their league campaign next Saturday away at Redditch.

Greyhound are out of the Vase after conceding their preliminary round home tie against Five Ways Old.

The Hereford side begin their Midlands 4 West (South) campaign at Harbury on Saturday.
