HEREFORD manager Pete Beadle said there is still more to come from his side and they will get better as the season progresses.

Despite looking second best for the majority of the game the Bulls held onto a goalless draw until the 93rd minute against league leaders Chorley when substitute Josh Wilson netted the winner.

Hereford goalkeeper Martin Horsell kept his side in the tie with a string of saves throughout the game but was helpless against the close range winner.

“We will look at the positives from it and if this is the best the league has to offer as they are top and won five out of five,” said Beadle.

“We know if we get it right we won’t be far off these and we fancy our chances. We have got some work to do and we knew that but we have played the top team today and came out second best in lots of areas of the pitch.

“We were a little bit toothless going forwards and a little bit flat in the first half and in the second half we started better, said Beadle.

“We thought that there was always going to be one goal to win it if there is one. It came from a little bit of a lack of concentration out wide and he flicked it between the two players and put the ball into the box.

“They will probably say they deserved to win it which they did throughout the game but sometimes you come up against a team who have won four on the bounce and you have to be resolute.

“But we did have some very good spells in the game but didn’t make the most of it. When you think of the saves (Martin) Horsell has had to make and we had very little but as a team we huffed and puffed and worked very hard to try and stop the way they play.

“For 92 minutes we did it and it’s disappointing we lost it the way we did but it will be a lesson early in the season.”

The Bulls will look back at their only big chance in the tie when Lance Smith ran onto Billy Murphy’s 78th minute cross but was denied by the goalkeeper’s legs.

“Maybe if Lance puts his goal away maybe the game changes on that one chance and we hadn’t had many chances to be fair,” Beadle added.

“It is small margins as these have played York at home and won Southport and convincingly beat them. They found it harder work today had lots of ball in the box.

“They are extremely relentless in what they try and do and are very effective, it’s not my type of football or how I would like to play but it works for them.

“We still know there is more to come from us and we will get better and have players to come back, work to do and players today are not 100 per cent fit.

“When the game got to half-way through that second half they were just starting to get on top a little bit and we got a little bit ragged which is understandable with young players in the group,” added Beadle.

“Unfortunately we couldn’t quite get the break and when it did fall for us we didn’t put it away.

“The quality in the changing room speaks for itself but today we probably weren’t on par when we had possession of the football and no real cutting edge in the final third.

“We will get better as the season goes on and today was a real tough test. Maybe last year we got away with playing at 70 per cent because we were that much better than a lot of teams in that division.

“This year we can’t do that and have to be at our best every single week to be competitive. It’s a good time for a review with a free week this week,

“As we get better we will become even more competitive and hopefully when we play Chorley at home it will still be one and two which would be nice,”
