SCORES of competitors headed to Ludlow Golf Club for the venue’s Weekend of Golf competitions.

Almost 200 competitors contested the Open Texas Scramble event that opened the weekend on the Friday.

Darren Humphries teamed-up with George Watton, Andy Ferriday and Andy Greenhalgh to record an under-par gross score on all 18 holes. The team’s 17 birdies and an eagle secured victory with a remarkable nett score of 49.65.

In a tight finish, runners-up M Gilmer, R Wilkinson, M Piggott and L Cartwright came in just 0.3 of a shot behind.

Lilleshall Hall GC’s Kevin and Jo Cole were on fire on the Saturday to win the club’s Betterball Open. The duo amassed a fantastic 48 points to win the stableford competition which attracted more than 160 competitors. The champions finished four shots clear of runners-up John Minton and Garry Guest and third-placed Roy and Jim Stevens.

Tony Weston and Jack Clemson’s gross 41 points was just enough to see off a challenge from Dave Fish and Connor White, due to their better back-nine score of 20 points.

And a sunny weekend of sport was rounded off on the Sunday by a mixed am-am event that drew a field of 100 entrants.

Mervyn and Ann Billingham and George and Sue Baylis teamed up to win a closely-contested event with a total score of 82 points, thanks largely to an impressive 44 the ladies had amassed.

Home players John and Pat Bown teamed up with Dave Wood and Anne Eaton, from Little Lakes, to finish in second with 81 points thanks to their back-nine score of 42.

Ludlow GC ladies’ captain Fran Sanders and husband Dave, together with Minehead GC’s Dave and Ruth Ball finished third.

Club president Peter Phelps has invited members to reserve a place at his Presidents’ Day competition on Saturday, September 1. Spots can be reserved by visiting the club or calling the pro shop.

There are still slots available in the Texas scramble and seniors’ open am-am competitions in October. Places can be booked online at ludlowgolfclub.com.

And entries are invited for the club’s popular Winter Open betterball events. Competitions will be held from November onwards.
