JAMIE Molyneux said he felt it was the right time to leave Westfields and undertake a new challenge.

The striker returned to allpay.park at the end of September after being released by Hereford.

But he has now linked up with fellow Midland League Premier Division outfit Highgate United and played against his former club in their 3-2 win on Saturday.

"It's on my door step and unfortunately Westfields' season fizzled out for me – they cant' go up and can't go down," said Molyneux.

"I loved every minute of my time there, and Sean Edwards has done a lot for me, as has the club.

"It will always have a place in my heart and they've got a great set-up, with everyone putting a lot of effort into the club.

"But I felt it was time for a new local challenge and promotion is definitely doable at Highgate."

Molyneux scored the opening goal for Westfields in their FA Vase fourth round tie against Hamble before the Hampshire club won 4-1.

And the 23-year-old felt it was a missed opportunity to go further in the competition.

"It probably should have been two or 3-0 at half and I think we went back out thinking it would be easy," added Molyneux.

"You can't do that in football and the rest is history."

Molyneux still believes he can perform at a higher level and felt he could have still offered something at Hereford.

"Any player’s aim is to play as high as they can, otherwise there's no point playing the game," he said.

"My time at Hereford was great, and I really think I could have added something this season, even as a squad player.

"I missed the majority of pre-season and was thrown in at the deep end at the start in some tough games against Merthyr and Slough.

"I think doing so well when I came on in the first game of the season at backfired on me.

"I'm still only 23 years of age though and I would have probably liked a bit more of an opportunity to improve and grow with the club."

Highgate won Saturday's game after Aaron Brown's close range strike with five minutes to go was deemed to have crossed the line.

Westfields went ahead thanks to a Mark Magee penalty in the 17th minute before Brown levelled 11 minutes later.

Ben Miller restored Westfields' lead just before half time, but Highgate hit back again when Michael Batchelor headed home a corner with just 10 minutes remaining.

And the away team won it thanks to Brown's dramatic winner.

"In my short time at Highgate I can already see the never say die attitude amongst the players," added Molyneux.

"We all stuck together and dug in deep, even when it probably looked to some people that we were going to lose 2-1.

"We didn't think that, we always thought we could get an opportunity, and thankfully we got the three points."

The two sides will go again tomorrow night in the reverse fixture.
