HAY St Mary's and Knighton Town, who both earned promotion last season, enjoyed differing fortunes on the opening day of the Spar Mid Wales League Division One campaign.

Hay slipped to a 1-0 defeat at home to Waterloo Rovers, while Knighton got off to a flier, securing a 3-2 win at Llanidloes Town.

Gareth Mansell bagged the winner for Knighton from the penalty spot after Oliver Richards and Connor Bird twice put them ahead.

One team who are not competing in the division this season though are Rhosgoch, who have withdrawn due to a lack of players.

The Crows, based near Clyro, have seen a number of recent player departures, as well as retirements and long-term injuries, resulting their decision to not continue.

Rhosgoch joined Mid-Wales League (South) in the 1993/94 season and finished third in 1999/2000.

Three runners-up places came between 2002 and 2005 before they were crowned champions a year later.

But the Crows failed to apply for promotion with Newbridge stepping up to what was then one division below the Spar Mid-Wales League.

But Rhosgoch did eventually gain promotion, as well as winning the Emrys Morgan Cup.

They then won Division Two last year and stepped up to Spar Mid-Wales League Division One.

An excellent start saw Rhosgoch occupy a top-three place before injuries an unavailability saw their form dip.

However, they still managed to finish sixth.

Meanwhile, in Division Two, there were opening day defeats for Presteigne St Andrews and Newbridge.

Presteigne went down 2-0 at Builth Wells, while Newbridge, fielding most of last season's under-16 side, crashed 9-0 at Kerry.

Radnor Valley, who won Mid-Wales League (South) last season, were due to kick-start their Division Two campaign at Newbridge-on-Wye.
