LEOMINSTER'S April medal was the first competition off grass tees this year and, despite blustery conditions, produced some good scores.

There were also some close finishes, especially in the low-handicappers' section where it took a countback to decide a three-way tie before Simon Morgan was announced the winner.

Round five of the mixed greensome accumulator went to Mark Pearson and Jane Powles with Greg Bridges and Gillian Sandell second.

The ladies' section held a nine-hole stableford in conjunction with a coffee morning which raised £303 for the Meningitis Trust.

There was a blanket finish to Hereford Muni-cipal's April stableford run in conjunction with the winter league competition.

Three players tied on 36 points and another three returned 35, requiring countbacks.

Dave Wooles was declared the winner ahead of Alan Leake and Mike Steele. Top lady finisher was Averil Magee, eighth with 33 points.

The event concluded the winter pairs championship with the best five results from seven to count.

Kevin Childs and Manu Bonnel took the title with 347 points to beat former holders Dave Wooles and Duncan Smith into second place with 331, while Shaun Vivian and Alan Leake were third on 35.

Afterwards, Frenchman Bonnel showed his delight with his first ever competition victory with a Champagne treat.

Jenny Wildman won the ladies' winter league by one point from Averil Magee.

n Around 150 members supported Willie Weaver's captain's drive-in at Herefordshire GC when the stableford competition produced a close finish.

Graham Joshua and Graham Davies were the winners of the competition to guess the position of the captain's two drives and the monies will go to St Michael's Hospice.

The final mixed competition of the winter season produced similar scores.

Dorothy Johnson was elected as an honorary life member in recognition of her contribution to the club. As well as being a member for well over 40 years, she has twice served as ladies' captain, is a former ladies' secretary over several years, and is currently ladies' treasurer.

The ladies' winter pairs had a close finish with Ann Evans and Pauline Dean winning on the first extra hole from Chris Crissal and Tina Bell.

The singles final was a match of changing fortunes before Brenda Tingley claimed victory over Jo Ellam on the 17th hole.

Herefordshire GC's Millennium Cup resulted in a return to winning ways for the men's team who beat the ladies by 407 points to 334 with the best 10 scores counting.

Best individuals were S Gwynne (men) 42 points and F Horobin (ladies) 37.

The newly-elected captains at Brockington Hall, club captain Peter Boughey and lady captain Betty Manning, held a well supported drive-in with a stableford competition.

Burghill Valley Seniors staged a five-club stableford.

The Seniors lost 6-1 in a friendly match at Forest Hills.

Cradoc's winter eclectic gross competition was won by Dai Lewis on 63, a score shared by second-placed Adrian Pride. Jeff Davies won the nett competition with 43, well ahead of Lewis and Tony Bowkett on 53.

The open day of the season took the form of a four-ball better-ball stableford.

Mike Harley was the winner of Kington's Hudson Cup - the first tournament of the summer season - played in blustery conditions and he will partner Andy Gealy in the PGA Trophy in the regional round.
