CLUB nights for under 18-year-olds have been a success in Worcester.

Ann Nicholls, Team Manager from the South Worcestershire Community Partnership, said the numbers of people attending the specially arranged nights for 13-16-year-olds at Sin nightclub are increasing.

"At the last event, the queues were right to the top of new street. 598 young people attended."

Ms Nicholls who speaks to the young people in the queue, said: "Young people travel from Birmingham and Bromsgrove, I ask them why they come all this way, and they say there isn't anything like this for them in their areas."

Ms Nicholls said:"Parents can drop them off and we make sure they're happy and safe.We make sure everybody gets home safely, no one is allowed to hang around outside, we make sure they get a bus or a taxi if they need one."

The club nights were the idea of Paul Todd, manager of Sin. Alcohol is banned and police are on hand to make sure there is no presence of drugs.

The police work with the council on the events known as 'Bounce' events.

Ms Nicholls said: "If we know someone is at risk we work as a partnership to make them safe. The atmosphere is great they are jumping up and down and dancing, it's a chance for them to have a good night in a safe venue."

"We are equipped to deal with any eventuality, McDonald's are also informed of what is going on."

Ian Cadwallder, part of Westmercia Police Cathedral Team said: "We provide a police presence for reassurance. If they are worried about anything they can come and speak to us. If any undesirables turn up we deal with them and prevent them troubling the young people."

Mr Cadwallder said: "It is really good, and very positive. It keeps them out of trouble and gives them some down time to enjoy themselves and not worry about things like the pressures of being a teenager and exams."

The police presence is also linked in with their 'tell someone' campaign which aims to prevent sexual exploitation. Schools and companies like McDonald's are involved with it.

The next bounce event is on Wednesday, May 30. See @bounceworcester on Facebook for details.
