AT last! The sun has decided to shine and with that comes thoughts of days on the beach. Here are my top ten tips for an enjoyable day or week away without breaking the bank.

1. Stay local and save fuel – a walk on the Malvern Hills, Arley Arboretum or watching the trains at Severn Valley Railway is more fun than being stuck on the motorway.

2. Check voucher sites, if the kids want a theme park don’t pay full price.

3. Check the ‘use by’ date on sunscreen, some last longer than others. Carry a small jar of coconut oil with you, which has SPF of 4 and will protect skin for up to 45 minutes – ideal if you unexpectedly find yourself caught out in the sun.

4. Packing a Thermos of tea or coffee and drinks for the kids allows you to choose your favourite spot to enjoy a cuppa instead of queueing in the crowds.

5. Brown bag your picnic lunch – again you can sit and enjoy this on the beach, by the river or on the top of a hill, peace and quiet, where you can soak up the scenery.

6. Be prepared. Buying your holiday essentials in advance will be easier and cheaper than buying when you get there.

7. Car sharing is ideal for smaller families or couples, halving the cost of the fuel and parking is an obvious money saver.

8. Holiday sharing. Renting a larger caravan or holiday let is usually much cheaper than two separate properties, but don’t forget that you may need a little additional space to make this one work.

9. Taking kids? Keep it simple. They don’t need as much as we think they do.

10. Packing waterproofs and wellies helps you to avoid the expense of rainy day escapes at shopping malls or games arcades.
