BROADWAY Arts Festival has announced this year's winners of its Open Art Competition.

The 2020 competition went ahead despite the festival, planned for June, having to be postponed due to coronavirus pandemic.

This year’s competition theme was “Hinterland” and was open to any artist, including international participants.

Artists were able to create work in any medium including painting, drawing, photography, sculpture, film, printmaking, textiles, ceramics, digital art, installation and designer makers.

The prize winners were; Karen Stamper for ‘Down at the Allotments II' winning the Richard Hagen Gallery Prize of £1000, Jane Overbury winning the Worshipful Company of Painter Stainers Prize for Representational Art of £500, Lindy Allfrey winning the John Noott Galleries Prize for Figurative Art of £500 and Judy Boyt winning the Little Buckland Gallery Prize for 3D Art of £500.

The New Entrant Prize of £250 was shared between Bina Shah and Deborah Westmancoat.

Alison Braithwaite, Broadway Arts Festival's operations and marketing director said: "The festival competition had over 700 entries from across the UK and Europe.

"The judging panel was made up of Stewart Geddes, past president of the Royal West of England Academy, and renowned local artist Ann Blockley."

The 200 works that made it through to the finals are now available to view and purchase on the arts festival website, broadwayartsfestival.com, as part of an online exhibition - with items available to buy.

Meanwhile the winner of the visitors choice award will be the artist gets the most votes on the website by the close of the exhibition in December.

To vote visit the festival website, viewing the competition exhibition gallery, clicking on ‘details’ for an individual artist and then clicking on the small heart where it says ‘Vote for this piece’.

Alison Braithwaite added that the current plan is that a full Broadway Arts Festival will go ahead in June 2021.

And, if possible, organisers want to have some small workshops and events go ahead later this year.

Annually the festival offers a varied programme of events designed to inspire, entertain and encourage participation in the arts.

It is aimed that there is something for everyone regardless of interest, age or artistic ability and attracts celebrity speakers, nationally renowned artists, award-winning theatre productions and world-class musicians.
