AN AUNTY has cycled 50 miles a day to raise money for a children’s charity which is close to her heart.

Sue O’Shaughnessy, from Pershore, has been cycling 50 miles a day in May – which is a three-hour bike ride daily – to raise money for Children with Cancer UK.

Sue’s inspiration to support the cancer charity is because of her ill niece, Tori, who was diagnosed with leukaemia in 2018 at the age of seven.

Sue, aged 38, said: “She is now just three months away from ringing the end of treatment bell. But I have learnt never to take anything for granted.

“Last year I was in contact with a lady in Drakes Broughton whose daughter was at the exact same stage that Tori is now, and her leukaemia returned just four months after she finished treatment.

“Charities like CWCUK are vital in boosting research into better treatments for childhood cancers, as government funding is limited and I can’t imagine it will get any better given the current crisis and the amount of money that is being pumped into the economy to keep it from collapsing.

“Ironically this comes at a time when charities themselves are struggling for donations, as mass participation events are being cancelled for the foreseeable future.”

Sue is due to take part in the London marathon in October – if it still goes ahead – and she had also secured a place on Ride London and Swim Serpentine. However, the Ride London event has already been cancelled and Sue expects the Swim Serpentine in September to also be cancelled.

She decided to take on the epic cycling challenge to compensate.

So far, she has raised £342 for the good cause. To donate, visit uk.virginmoneygiving.com/Si-and-Sue-OShaughnessy
