A PE teacher has launched a fitness YouTube channel for anyone to access from their own home during lockdown.

Tom Dalton, PE coordinator from Kempsey Primary School, set up the YouTube channel to give children and adults PE lesson ideas while they are at home.

Pupils had shown there was a demand for PE activities after a daily online class by celebrity trainer Joe Wicks pulled in a million viewers.

Mr Dalton said: “The difference between this and Joe Wicks is that I have some lessons based on the national curriculum. I still want children developing skills such as striking, fielding, catching and throwing. My aim is to keep as many children active and engaged in their PE as possible whilst still helping them access sports such as hockey, tennis, gymnastics and dance. This means that they can continue to grow in these areas.”

There will be a range of activities to take part in linked to the national curriculum in PE and that can be done with equipment found at home. These include tennis, gymnastics, dance and hockey activities and he has also started an Active 10 program, which is a 10-minute burst of energy to get children and adults focussed and ready to take on the day.

Mr Dalton said the fitness coach had inspired him but added: “However, my inspiration for this specific channel came from my school. Whilst getting lesson packs ready for Maths and English, I was trying to think of ways to do a similar thing for PE.

“I decided to film a few lesson ideas specific to what we do at Kempsey and then I thought, why not make it more general in order to help anyone who might be looking for curriculum PE?”

He has been posting videos daily, alternating between lesson plans and Active 10 sessions so there is something for everyone. He added: “I think PE is vitally important at the moment. A lot of people will be going a bit stir crazy and I think in a time when looking after people’s mental health is so important, exercise can help to do that.”
