ONE of the county’s most successful charity events has been postponed due to the coronavirus crisis.

The Big Sleep Out, which raises money for three major homeless charities in Worcester, has been postponed.

The event supports the work of St Paul’s Hostel, Warriors Community Foundation, and Maggs Day Centre and was due to be held on April 23 at Sixways Stadium.

The sleep out will return in November this year after organisers took the decision to cancel.

In a statement on the Big Sleep Out website, a spokesman said: “It is with regret we have taken the decision to postpone the Big Worcester Sleep out 2020 until November.

“Our mission is to raise awareness of the complex issues surrounding homelessness within our county, and the services our charities relentlessly push forward.

“We are aiming to raise £45,000 for 2020 with all of the funds raised to be split equally between our charities.”

Last year’s Big Sleep Out helped raise more than £30,000 for the three organisations, which provide a lifeline to vulnerable people across the county.

117 people turned out to sleep at Sixways in sleeping bags, wrapped up warm against the cold.

Maggs Day Centre and St Paul's hospice provide accommodation, food and health support to rough sleepers.

The Warriors Community Foundation helps young people with mental health issues, disabilities and those who are disengaged from mainstream schooling.

It also helps young people who have suffered trauma as well as working with schools, sports clubs and on the streets to provide support.
