WORK to improve a vital motorway junction near Worcester is still ongoing, despite promises it would be finished two months ago.

Highways England promised the work would be completed in January, but there are still lane closures planned for the coming weeks.

The work at Junction 6 started in April 2018 and was initially scheduled to be finished in winter 2018-19, but the completion date was then put back to autumn 2019, and then again pushed back – with February 2020 now the target.

Engineers carrying out the work were forced to delay it after “unsuitable ground conditions” which included flooding underneath the road, requiring extra work.

The work on M5 Junction 6 is designed to improve the capacity and access to the motorway and the surrounding areas such as Warndon. The roadworks have caused significant traffic delays.

This week will see narrow lanes in place on the roundabout and all approaches in addition to night-time off-peak (8pm to 6am) full closures and lane closures.

Highways England said they completed the majority of the work and removed roadworks on the roundabout before Christmas.

The recent bad weather meant Highways teams could not get the work done to the original plan, but they are hoping the road will be ready for Easter.

Highways England senior project manager, Zbigniew Twarowski, said: "We’ve had horrendous weather conditions in recent weeks including significant rainfall which has meant we’ve not been able to get as much of the work done overnight as we’d planned.

"However, our teams are working really hard and we’re on course to complete all of the work in time for the Easter getaway. We’d like to thank motorists for their patience while this scheme comes to an end."
