Classical drama is not all Greek to the talented members of The Young Rep, who are set to tackle Medea, by Euripides, with an English language production of the ancient tragedy, at Worcester's Huntingdon Hall.

A spokesman said: “Following on from their incredible inaugural production of William Shakespeare’s Macbeth, described in the press as ‘...the future of theatre..’, TheYoung Rep return to the stage with this incredible retelling of the world’s most prolific Greek tragedy, Medea.

“The Young Rep was founded in 2018 to celebrate the link between the Worcester Repertory Company and the Swan Youth Theatre.

Worcester Rep Associate Director and Artistic Director of The Young Rep, Ben Humphrey said: “Since the Swan Theatre opened its doors back in 1965, youth theatre has been an integral part of its very fabric .

“There has always been an inspiring link between the Swan Youth Theatre and the Worcester Rep, and the Rep’s Golden Anniversary seemed the perfect time to celebrate that link.”

Formed from the Swan Youth Theatre’s award-winning SYT Company, The Young Rep is now in the final stages of rehearsal for its latest production, which will take to Huntingdon Hall’s stage this March.

In this Greek tragedy we see Medea wronged by her husband, and father to her children, Jason. This pushes Medea, and her vengeance knows no limits as she embarks upon a campaign of retribution from which she can never return.

Jon Legg, who has directed with the Worcester Rep before for productions such as Twelfth Night in 2018, has been brought on board to direct The Young Rep’s take on Euripides’ classic.

“It’s a great privilege to work with this young company on a modern version of one of the most ancient and powerful plays in the history of theatre” he says. “Originally performed in 430 B.C.E, the reason it has survived so long is down to the emotional rollercoaster that the story delivers.”

The run will be from March 18 to March 21.
