WORCESTER suffered a power cut last night, which residents reported to have happened after a bright flash across the sky.

The flash reportedly happened at about 6.30pm, and then power went down across the city including in roads in Kempsey, St Peter's, Diglis, Fernhill Heath, Red Hill, and Brook End.

Western Power Distribution (WPD) posted a message on its website at around 7pm to say: "Our apologies to customers affected by a #powercutin #Worcester #WR5. Engineers are working on it and estimate to restore all supplies by 8.30pm. Our apologies for any inconvenience."

And at 9pm WPD wrote: "We're pleased to say that all power supplies to #WR5 #Worcester area are restored.

"We are sorry for any inconvenience caused by the #powercut."

A WPD spokesman said: "There was a power cut, that initially affected 1,292 customers.

"They were restored in stages, with the last restorations of the power taking place at 7.20pm.

"The flash can happen (before a power cut) and a typical example of how it could happen is by a tree going into power lines.

"Patrols have been examining the lines today to check."
