We’re fast approaching half-term and with that comes the kids’ perennial demands for all sorts of things.

Throwing money at the problem may work, but before rushing our for a £100+ theme park extravaganza, take a few minutes to research the alternatives, you will be amazed at what’s on offer!

Starting in Worcester, The Hive has lots of free stuff going on during half term. On Monday, the first of two children’s free events is aimed at eight to 12-year-olds who will learn how to code, Ghostbuster-style.

You need to book and take headphones (also available on the day at £1.60) for this 10.45am- 11.45am session. The second activity of the day is a free, drop-in, story telling session, 11am until 2.45pm, no booking required.

On Tuesday The Hive hosts a Worcestershire Wildlife free craft activity when children will make their own spooky spider, perfect for Halloween, and enjoy a spider themed story time afterwards.

If we’re lucky and get good weather, Worcestershire abounds with green spaces so take a walk on the wild side over the Malvern Hills or pick up a tennis racket and head for one of the many parks which offer tennis courts for free!

For children who are determined to stay home with their beloved computer, why not check out the many competitions which are sure to stimulate creativity.

National Geographic Kids offers a wide range of competitions

Readers will love the competitions at The Book Trust

And for the writers check out the Young Writers website

And the Evesham Festival of Words short story competition opens on November 1, so no better time to get writing!

Whatever you do, I wish you a happy half-term.
