A COUNCILLOR is calling for residents to look out for signs of fly-tipping in their area after a sofa was dumped on land.

The furniture item was found in Aconbury Orchard, near to a residential area.

Lucy Hodgson, Worcester City councillor for Warndon with responsibility for communities, said: “One of the residents left a sofa out overnight to be collected in the morning - a paid legitimate service.

“But during the night people took it to a wooded area, fly-tipping the sofa.

“It annoys me as when things like this are dumped.

“It has a financial impact on the tax payer.

Andy Jones, 32, resident of Warndon Villages, said: “I think these are teens that are looking for someone to go that’s a bit more private.

“I’m all for people making camps in the woods - it’s a good use for it, provided they’re not causing trouble and leaving a load of rubbish behind.

“But it does make me question whether the area provides suitable places for these people to hang out.

“One main complaint people have is about rubbish - but if we know where they’re going we can put a bin there, or one of the many helpful.”

Cllr Lucy Hodgson added: “Members of the public need to report any instances of fly-tipping.

“When looking for someone to take away household waste, check their licence as I’ve also known of people paying for household waste to be taken away and then dumped later on.”

A City Council spokesperson said: “Two members of Worcester City Council’s conservation team, removed a sofa which had been deposited in Aconbury Orchard.

“They collected it and took it to a compactor skip for disposal.”
