A FAMILY of travelling showpeople are "reasonably happy" after being permitted to move their fairground equipment and caravans onto green belt land temporarily.

The Jennings' fairground rides have been a feature of Stourport Carnival since 1947, but the family have been struggling to find a permanent home within the Wyre Forest district after being told they can't store their half a million pounds worth of equipment on their own land.

After several refused planning applications, the family now have permission to move to a site at the former Burlish Golf Centre, located off Zortech Avenue, for a total of two years.

The family previously feared they would be made homeless if a planning application was refused again.

The proposal was approved by councillors at a planning meeting on Tuesday, September 17 and was previously recommended for approval by planning officers and Stourport Town Council.

The site has has hardstanding areas utilised for car parking and access to the club house buildings, which have been derelict since 2017.

But, the family are still concerned it will cost them thousands to clear and fence off the site, and that their move is only temporary.

At the planning meeting, Councillor Marcus Hart and Councillor Fran Oborski questioned why the site was only proposed for two years and not permanent.

The development manager said: "The application hasn't asked for temporary permission, it's something that officers feel is necessary because otherwise it would be recommended for refusal on the basis it would prejudice a future proposal for employment land."

Neil Jennings said: "We are happy in a way because we have got somewhere to go, but it's still not permanent.

"We have done what we have done for years.

"We are reasonably happy with the result, but we have got to find a way of making it habitable without spending too much money.

"We don't want to be spending money we haven't got."
