THE Liberal Democratic candidate for Worcester has said he is ready to fight the general election as the clear party of remain.

Stephen Kearney has been at the Liberal Democrats conference where, yesterday, new leader Jo Swinson vowed, if elected to government, the party would revoke Article 50 and stop Brexit.

Ms Swinson criticised Mr Johnson’s pledge to take the UK out of the EU by October 31, with or without a deal.

Asked about the criticism by some that this shift in policy would damage their chances in a general election, Mr Kearney said in fact the clarity was exactly what the electorate wanted.

“I think people have shifted their position since the referendum, and if another referendum was called people are more informed now,” Mr Kearney said.

“That last referendum leavers were mislead.

“They have also seen the circus at parliament unfold.

“The biggest democratic exercise is about to happen, a general election. We are the remain party, that will be clear.

“People want clarity, they are fed up with all the dithering, the Tories have allowed this country to fall apart.

“Jo Swinson is ready to become the next Prime Minister.

“Both Boris Johnson and Jeremy Corbyn have both proved to be dangerous.

“The Prime Minister is a danger to democracy. We are ready to rebuild our parliamentary democracy.”

Mr Kearney was also critical of city MP Robin Walker, who was a Brexit minister in Theresa May’s government.

“Robin Walker has been so weak,” Mr Kearney said.

“He was once a very reasonable politician.

“He campaigned for remain, but he is furthering his career not taking action. The fact he voted for prorogation was shocking.”

Mr Kearney added the conference, being held in Bournemouth this week, had been a big success.

“Jo’s speech was a barnstormer,” he said.

“We have had record numbers (attending), party membership is through the roof.

“We are the party of hope, when others offer doom and gloom, and hatred.

“I’m ready to fight the election.”
