PARENTS with children who have or may have dyslexia can attend a special open evening on the subject in Bromsgrove next weekend.

On Friday, September 20, from 5-7pm, Bromsgrove Dyslexia Workshop - based at the Wendron Centre on Chapel Street - will open its doors to interested parents and professionals.

Hereford and Worcester Dyslexia Association will then run a Dyslexia Parent Support Group on the third Friday of every month.

Jane Hateley, a senior tutor at HWDA, said: "The open evening is an opportunity to see how so many children with dyslexia or dyslexic-type difficulties have made amazing progress and gone on to lead fulfilled lives.

"Parents will also be able to speak with senior tutors and other parents to obtain information and share experiences."

There will be free drop-ins throughout the year when the support group gets under way, some with guest speakers covering a variety of relevant topics.

Parents who are concerned about their child’s progress in school will have access to support, information, resources and ideas in a friendly atmosphere.

There will be advice on how to help your child at home, plus the opportunity to have your child’s school and Educational Psychologist reports translated into plain English.

There will be a representative from Redditch Library, who will be discussing and exhibiting dyslexia-friendly books, as well as promoting a reading group.

Jane added: "Although our main area of expertise is Dyslexia (problems with words), we are happy to help with any of the related Specific Learning Difficulties (SpLD), such as Dyscalculia (maths and number), Dysgraphia (handwriting) and Autistic Spectrum (communication skills) where possible."

All parents interested in the group, whether or not their child receives tuition at the workshop, are welcome to attend the drop-in sessions. HWDA membership is not required.

HWDA is a local charity which covers the two counties and for over 40 years has worked to provide specialist teaching in literacy, maths and study skills for children with dyslexia or dyslexic-type difficulties and/or dyscalculic-type difficulties through its teaching workshops in Bromsgrove, Hereford and Worcester.
