IF you’re searching for a rural pub that provides tremendous hospitality, then look no further, as Pub Spy has found the place to go.

The Masons Arms in Wichenford was a pleasant venture out and is worthy of a visit in my eyes.

Upon arrival, my date and I headed straight to the bar. It was a weeknight and I’d presumed the venue would be quiet, especially after the kids have just gone back to school. Could I have been more wrong? The bar was heaving and there were plenty of families sat enjoying their meals.

We had to wait a couple of minutes to be served as the barmaid was rushed off her feet. She was very friendly and offered service with a smile. She suggested for us to go into the restaurant dining area where she explained would be a little quieter and would offer more light.

After taking my Coke into the restaurant – I was driving – I was eager to take a seat and browse the menu. Our table was situated next to glass doors that overlooked the beer garden and front terrace. It was a stunning view overlooking Berrow Hill and the sun had begun to set.

So much caught my eye on the menu. There was almost too much on offer that it was difficult to decide what to order. After glancing through multiple times, I worked up a craving for halloumi chips – one of my guilty pleasures. It came with sweet chilli sauce and chilli oil, priced at £6.50, which I thought was reasonable.

My dinner date ordered fried chicken wings with Franks hot sauce (£6.95) – and judging by his face when munching on this, it did look hot.

As for our main course, the fish pie took my fancy. This comprised smoked haddock, salmon, prawns and pangasius topped with cheddar mash and served with seasoned broccoli.

I wouldn’t usually spend £13.95 on a fish pie. However, after tasting how scrumptious it was, it certainly was worth it. I loved the cheddar mash combined with the fish. The topping was incredible, and the cheese was lightly toasted on top. It was a generous portion that hit the spot.

My date chomped his way through an oriental burger with hoisin pulled pork and spring onion, which was served with chips. His meal came to a sensible £12.50.

Both courses arrived swiftly and they were piping hot. All in all, for two drinks, two starters and two mains, the bill came to £46.10.

According to the pub’s website, owners ‘Laura and Nibs’ from Worcester took over The Masons Arms in February 2012.

They’ve been involved in the hospitality trade for over 20 years, including running pubs in Soho, central London and then onto the slower paced town of Haslemere in Surrey.

The Masons Arms would offer a relaxed and tranquil vibe in the winter when the wood burners are lit. It oozes cosiness and a snug atmosphere.

The food and character at the pub are well worth the journey out of town.

Staff were attentive and welcoming. The food was glorious. The décor was modernised with a cosy touch. And if you enjoy a good view, you’d certainly appreciate what the pub has to offer.
