WORCESTER’S former Labour MP has ruled out a return to politics, despite his fears the country is sleepwalking into a "disastrous" no deal Brexit.

Mike Foster has said he would campaign wholeheartedly for remain if there was ever a second referendum, but fears Britain is currently edging closing to crashing out at the end of October.

On taking office Boris Johnson vowed to do all he can to renegotiate a withdrawal agreement but insisted the UK will leave in 70 days time with or without a deal - "do or die".

"I remember the fuel protests of 2000, it took two weeks for the country to run out of petrol and diesel," Mr Foster said.

"That brought the country to a standstill. Imagine that magnified, on a bigger scale affecting fresh food and vegetables, medical supplies - I even saw in the government's leaked dossier that the chemical to keep water drinkable could be affected.

"This dossier isn't remain campaign material, its written by civil servants doing their duty.

"It is their job, if there is a problem, to warn elected ministers.

"Remember this is the best case estimate. That should be sending alarm bells.

"But too many people are playing politics - you can't play politics with something as important as Brexit."

Mr Foster said he feared the shortage of key medicines could lead to deaths by Brexit, and he felt the government will be preparing for rationing - a situation he said was "beyond belief".

"No deal might not be at the forefront of people's minds, but when you have suddenly lost your job it will be too late," he said.

Mr Foster served as the city MP from 1997 until 2010 and asked if the current political situation would tempt him to stand again for Parliament, he said he was happy on the outside.

"In the current climate there is no way the Labour Party would even contemplate me returning anyway," he said.

"The good thing about being a former MP is I can give my opinions, although the party is trying to silence me.

"If there was a second referendum I would throw myself wholeheartedly into a remain campaign."
