A MAN has been fined £400 after being spotted fly tipping rubbish including a child’s bed on a street in Malvern.

Witnesses reported seeing the man getting out of a vehicle in Bellars Lane before dumping a broken up children’s bed, carpet and black sacks of household waste down an alleyway.

Environmental protection officers from Malvern Hills District Council tracked him down to an address in Malvern.

He admitted to the charge and was fined for the offence.

Cllr John Raine said: “I hope these incidents send a clear message that we will not hesitate to take action against those who put our environment at risk by acting irresponsibly.

“Large amounts of waste can be taken to Household Recycling Centres or put in the hands of a reputable company, with a waste carrier’s licence to dispose of it responsibly.

“We want everyone to play their part in keeping our district clean and tidy by putting their litter in a bin or taking it home with them and putting it in their green or black bins.”

The offence took place on July 17 and is one of three successful actions for fly tipping or littering carried out by officers from Malvern Hills District Council in recent weeks.

On July 31, a delivery driver was seen throwing his delivery notes out of his van at Hill View Gardens in Ripple.

The company he worked for was contacted and the Cheltenham resident admitted the offence and was given a £75 fine for littering.

A woman driving along the A44 towards Cotheridge on July 17 was also given a £75 for littering after being spotted by the council officers throwing a cigarette out of a car window.

Discarded cigarette butts are particularly damaging to the environment as they contain toxic chemicals that seep into soils and waterways causing pollution.

They can take up to ten years to break down and also pose a risk to wildlife.
