A DAY which celebrates gardening and flowers is set to come to Worcester.

The whole day event will feature talks, demonstrations, stalls, a floral exhibition from flower clubs and societies around the region, and games along with floral competitions and workshops for all ages.

The Cathedral Flower Guild will be hosting the event, called Flower Power Day, in Worcester Cathedral on Saturday, August 24.

Melanie Weston, organiser said: “Have you ever wondered how those huge Cathedral floral displays come about? There’s a small army, otherwise known as the Cathedral Flower Guild, of 43 creative women whose talents mean that the Cathedral visitors get to see amazing and beautiful floral arrangements.

“While we can volunteer our time and routinely raid from our own gardens, we need to buy all the flowers.”

Ms Weston added: “Our Flower Power Day is our first one day interactive celebration of flowers and gardening for all the family to enjoy regardless of experience, age or ability and in this busy day and age.

“We’re hoping that this event will introduce others to the sense of wellbeing and fun in getting hands muddy and bringing the outdoors in.

“It’s an engaging and relaxing day out with lots to do, browse, learn and buy – with a wide variety of stalls from produce and plants through to art from local artists Harriet Wilson and Lesley Rowley.”

The main event is free and there’s a mix of activities which cost either £4 or £5 per head. These include hands on 60-minute workshops with creations to take home.

There will also be two competitions with homemade entries judged on the day.

Mel Weston and Julie Pearce will be demonstrating how to make something creative with silk and flowers and foliage.

Darren Rudge, the ‘Laughing Gardener’ from BBC Radio West Midlands, Coventry and Warwickshire will be sharing tips on eco-gardening on a budget - teabags, bras and tights will be featured in the talk.

There will also be 14 clubs from around the region showcasing floral arrangements for the public to enjoy, whilst also inviting new members to sign up.
