A MAN who murdered his mother with a chainsaw has been found dead in prison.

Robert Owens admitted attacking his mother, Iris Owens, with a chainsaw, as well as strangling and breaking her ribs by kicking her.

Mrs Owens, aged 75, was putting washing out in the garden when her son attacked her with a chainsaw, killing her, in May 2016.

He was jailed later that year at Cardiff Crown Court for a minimum of 12 years and six months.

50-year-old Owens died in Long Lartin Prison in Worcestershire, on 14 July.

Owens was in a men’s prison located in the village of South Littleton, which is midway between Evesham and Bidford on Avon.

The Prisons and Probation Ombudsman is investigating following his death.

He admitted his mother's murder, who lived in Ystrad Mynach, Caerphilly county.

According to the BBC, Owens was cutting some firewood when he claimed his mother "went mad" and the pair argued.

Owens said he was a heroin addict and had last taken the drug at midnight the night before he murdered his mother.

Tests revealed morphine, heroin and cocaine were in his system.

According to the Wales Online, at Owens' sentencing hearing in November 2016, the mother and son had lived together at the house since the death of Mrs Owens' husband Haydn in 2004, and the end of Owens' marriage in 2006.

The two were described as having a "close, loving and supportive relationship".

Neighbours told police they heard loud cries and the sound of a chainsaw starting.

Owens called the emergency services himself at 5.21pm, and paramedics discovered him at the property in an agitated state with blood on his hands and clothing.

Mrs Owens was found lying on her back near a tree stump and was pronounced dead at the scene.

At court, Judge Mrs Justice Nicola Davies told Owens it was a "tragic and senseless murder of a good mother by her son.”
