A WELLBEING event is taking place for members of the LGBT+ community in a bid to support mental health.

The event, which is sponsored by the charity Time to Change, will explore some of the reasons why poor mental health is so common in the LGBT+ community.

The day will introduce ideas and techniques that can be used to support people experiencing mental health problems.

Nicola Longworth-Cook, founder of Out2gether, the LGBT+ organisation in Worcester, said: “One in four people will experience a mental health problem this year. In the LGBT+ community it’s one in two. It’s time that changed.

“We’re holding this event because it’s bad enough that in wider society one in four people will experience poor mental health this year; but research by the charity Stonewall indicates that the incidence of poor mental health in the LGBT+ community is double that.

“There’s a lot of stigma around mental health and I hope this event will get us talking about it, tackling that stigma and taking the first step back to wellbeing as individuals and as a community.

“We’re very grateful for the support from Time to Change which has enabled us to make the event this Saturday afternoon free to attend.”

There will also be a further four follow-up sessions throughout August with Bridget Maddison, a qualified mental health professional, for those wishing to explore the benefits of smaller group sessions.

The session will take place tomorrow (August 3) from 2pm to 5pm.

Everyone from the LGBT+ community and supportive allies are welcome to attend at The Angel Centre, in Worcester.

These sessions will be subsidised – however, there is a suggested donation of £5 per person per session.
