Sir – I saw your article and comments regarding the discontinuance of the creche at St John’s Sport Centre. Freedom Leisure only asked their clients who use the creche if they thought that a creche would be a good idea at Perdiswell.

They were not aware that the intention was to close the one at St.Johns and naturally said yes to the idea.

When the council who previously ran and still owns St John’s Sport Centre arranged for a creche, this was done to give mums the opportunity to improve their health which they could not have done before the creche.

I believe that Freedom Leisure wanted to open a creche in Perdiswell.  They had no qualified staff available there but at St.Johns they had 3 staff who were well qualified with many years experience.  They closed the creche in St.Johns and moved the staff to Perdiswell.  I admit that the creche in St.Johns was free but the users of same were willing to pay for their use. This was declined.

For residents of St John’s, there is great difficulty in using the facilities at Perdiswell.

The traffic between the two facilities is extremely heavy most of the day that the use of Perdiswell becomes impractical.

“Three miles up the road” might as well be 100 miles.

Surely to run a creche in each facility is the most logical solution.  This will promote health in the community.

I miss seeing those mums being active in the gym!
