A WOMAN who is described as a “star” has been nominated four times for a Worcestershire Education Award.

Kay Barrett, secretary from Bowbrook House School, has been nominated for the Support Staff of the Year Award.

Mrs Barrett said: “It is very humbling. I try and do my best at my job and keep myself to myself. The beauty of the job is that it is so diverse. I love my job – I deal with a range of children from different ages, they keep me young. Bowbrook has been a lovely school to work at. It has that family atmosphere.”

Mrs Barrett, aged 65, will be retiring in July after being at the school in Peopleton, near Pershore for 11 years. She added: “I am apprehensive to retire; however, I am looking forward to the future ahead. I have grandchildren of my own, so it is time to move on and prioritise my own family.”

Ceri Land, who nominated Mrs Barrett said: “The children adore her, and the parents marvel at the fact she knows everything there is to know about Bowbrook.”

Headteacher Christopher Allen said: “She is the consummate professional, she is the epitome of the school's core values. Her calmness under pressure when faced with poorly children, busy parents, coach delays, road traffic accidents, games injuries, sickness epidemics, stressed teenagers, escaped pigs. are all are dealt with calmly and with good humour.”

Lisa Bille said: “Nothing is too much trouble and she goes above and beyond any request. I believe she holds the whole school together. Mrs Barrett works so hard with her duties but still is a delight and all the children know and love her."

John Airey said: “Mrs Barrett is incredibly knowledgeable, patient and helpful whenever we need to contact the school. Mrs Barrett is an asset and an ambassador for the school. She is a star.”
