WHY not celebrate the Yuletide season with bagpipes, fiddles and step dancing at the Huntingdon Hall in Worcester?

But while the Celtic tone of the celebration will be unmistakable, the entertainment will not be coming from Scotland but from just over the border, in fact.

A spokesman said: “The international-award-winning Welsh band Calan are back on the road with their infectious rhythms and high energy

routines to celebrate the Yuletide season.

“Calan brings together the remarkable talents of five young musicians, giving a fresh and vibrant sound to traditional Welsh music.

“The five-piece band comprises Bethan Rhiannon, Patrick Rimes, Angharad Jenkins, Sam Humphreys and Alice French.”

It’s been a remarkable journey for the band, who began by busking on the streets of Cardiff, raising money to pay for university fees.

And by 2015 they were performing alongside Bryn Terfel and Sting at the Royal Albert Hall in London as part of Bryn Terfel’s 50th birthday party.

The spokesman added: “Following the release of their debut album, Bling in 2008, which attracted four star responses from the critics, the five-piece has been playing to big audiences and receiving rave reviews at concerts and festivals around Britain and Europe, including the coveted Cambridge Festival; Celtic Connections, Glasgow; Shrewsbury Folk Festival; Moseley Folk Festival; Derby Folk Festival; Bromyard Folk Festival; Whitby Folk Festival; a concert tour of Italy, Austria and Belgium; and a number of performances at the Festival Interceltique de Lorient, Brittany, where they received the award for Best Group.

“With a contemporary and lively approach they breathe new life into old traditions and blast their way through some of the old favourite reels, jigs and hornpipes.”

The date for A Celtic Christmas with Calan is Saturday, December 15, at 7.30pm.
