A DECISION will be made on whether or not a KFC will be built in the city centre this week.

The plans for the popular fast food restaurant to move into an empty building in The Cross were put on hold during last month's city council planning committee to allow for councillors to see the city centre at night for themselves.

Despite being earmarked for refusal, a decision on the plan was not as straightforward as expected and support for the KFC split the committee.

The planning report showed many concerns over crime and anti-social behaviour in a part of the city centre already suffering from a high level of disorder.

Objections were also made by the police - who called it a "recipe for disaster" - as well as neighbours, taxi drivers and the county's Public Health bosses.

Public Health said another fast food restaurant in The Cross would be adding to an area already heavily concentrated with takeaways.

The Hopmarket Charity said a new KFC would “only make matters worse for those living and in business in this central area of the city.”

The city council's planning committee meets again on Thursday (October 18) to make a decision.
