LIVERPOOL and Ireland football legends will be appearing in Worcester in a charity show.

Eighties legends Ronnie Whelan, Ray Houghton and Jim Beglin will star in the show called "When Irish Eyes Are Smiling" at Worcestershire County Cricket ground in August.

The Irish trio will meet and greet fans before talking about their illustrious careers and answering questions.

There will also be funds raised for the Offside Trust, which was founded last November by ex-footballer Steve Walters and ex-pro golfer Chris Unsworth to support fellow child abuse survivors and to safeguard children from abuse in all sports.

The evening follows the successful Eurowinners show last month featuring Terry McDermott, Alan Kennedy and Jimmy Case.

Organiser Nick Tanner, who also played for Liverpool in the early 90s, said: “Following the great success of our legends night last month, we’ve decided to come back to Worcester.

“The legends had a great night and this time we’re going with the theme of when Irish Eyes Are Smiling as all three players, not only graced the pitch for Liverpool but for Ireland too.

"We also want to do our bit for the Offside Trust and raise awareness."

Midfielder Whelan, who captained Liverpool, played 493 first team games, scoring 73 goals. He scored in 14 consecutive seasons and is remembered for spectacular goals in cup finals and for the Ireland team at Euro 88.

He won six league title medals, three FA Cups, a European Cup and three Milk Cup medals in his time with the club.

Marauding midfielder Houghton was a star of the team in the late 80s and along with Whelan played in the FA Cup semi-final of 1989 at Hillsborough where 96 Liverpool fans died.

He played 197 games, scored 37 goals and won two league titles and FA Cups.

He is heralded in Ireland for scoring the winning goal against Italy in the 1994 World Cup finals group match.

Beglin was the last signing by legendary manager Bob Paisley.

He was in the team for the European Cup Final of 1985 against Juventus which was remembered for the Heysel Stadium disaster when 39 Juventus supporters died after a wall collapsed.

The classy full back was a team regular in the double winning side of 1985-6 but suffered a "horror" leg break before retiring aged 27 with a knee injury.

He is now a regular co-commentator on BT Sport.

The evening, which is hosted in conjunction with the Brewers Arms pub in St John's and the Worcester Area Liverpool FC Supporters Club, will take place on Friday, August 11.
