A FREE school that will apply an educational approach adopted by a 19th century Italian philosopher could open near Ross-on- Wye.

A group of parents have started making plans to open the Wye Valley Montessori.

The state-funded school would cater for around 120 children aged between four and 16 who live in the Ross, Monmouth and Forest of Dean area.

Montessori education uses an approach developed by the Italian physician and educator Maria Montessori.

It is practised in around 20,000 schools across the world.

Emphasis is placed on independence, freedom within limits and respect for a child’s natural psychological development, as well as technological advancements in society.

Parent Nicola Daley said that the group will send their submission to the Department for Education next month and if successful hope to open the school in September 2014.

  • A public meeting about the plans will be held at the Larrupuerz Centre in Ross on Tuesday from 7.30pm to 9.30pm.
